The Aptos Club as “TWO LIVE CREW – UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL, BUFFET
DINNER AND SHOW,” it could also have had an additional caption, “an intimate evening with the girls of 2 Live Crew.”
After a high energy, hard rocking, set by The Fire Sermon, there was an air of
expectation in the chill of the night. 2 Live Crew has been the most
controversial rap group of all time. In 1987, in Florida, a store clerk was
charged with a felony for selling their sexually graphic release, “2 Live Is
What We Are,” to a 14 year old girl. But it was 1989’s “As Nasty As They
Wanna Be” that brought 2 Live Crew world wide attention. With little radio
play, the song “Me So Horny” became their biggest hit. It was taken from a
line by a Vietnamese prostitute in
Stanley Kubrick’s “Full Metal Jacket.”
1990 marked the beginning of charges and legal actions from conservative
groups that resulted in lawsuits, counter suits and, at one point, the the
arrest of the 2 Live Crew members. Now, reuniting for a 2004 tour and album
release of Fresh Kid Ice’s “Freaky Chinese,” the entourage pulled up in a
long, white tour bus and were greeted respectfully and warmly by the guys and
gals there. These were hard core fans who knew the music, the lyrics and the
history. It was on the stage though that the melding between artist and audience
came together in an exceptional party atmosphere. When the Crew announced that
they would be doing all their classic stuff from years ago, the house to a tee,
erupted in joy. Their lyrical interpretations of “Doo Wah Diddy Diddy” and
“All Day and All of the Night” were real treats with their turn tablist
cranking out skillfully skewed beats. The Crew girls put on some very athletic
dancing and shaking with several of the gals around the stage hopping on board
to join them. Without a doubt, a most memorable evening was had by all in the
little seaside town of Aptos.
So,
what’s up next for the Crew? Their manager, Dap, has agreed to a phone
interview with the boys. And, guess what? You, the readers, get to send in your
